The country_s military budget grew by 17-percent in 2014 to 80.8 billion dollars. It marks the biggest jump among the world_s top defense spenders. The increase reflects the volatility in the Middle East. But when it comes to over-ALL spending the US is still far and away the global leader. Their bill totaled 610 billion dollars last year. The Gap Sears and Target are among 13 major US retailers being investigated in New York for how they schedule their hourly workers. Attorney general Eric Schneiderman has asked them all for details on the companies_ use of on-call shifts. It_s a growing trend that allows stores to have more staff when it_s busy and fewer when times are slow. Employees are often told whether they_ll be working just hours before the start of a shift making it difficult for them to manage family life like child care. Fortunately, a cold front on Sunday provided some desperately-needed relief.Drug enforcement officials in Tempe, Arizona are celebrating after dismantling a huge drug cell and arresting 20 suspects. The six-month investigation culminated in quite a haul of seized drugs and other items. They took in 3 tons of marijuana and 30 pounds of meth, along with 2-point-4 million in cash, 14 guns, cars, and even an airplane.The cell was connected with Mexico_s notorious Sinaloa Cartel. They would smuggle the drugs into Tempe, where they would be distributed from California to New York. The Sinaloa Cartel is one of the most powerful and brutal in Mexico. Their leader, Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, is worth a billion dollars, according to Forbes.With 4th of July vacations over, it_s time for Washington to get back to work, and President Obama has HIS work cut out for him. He_s re-igniting the tax debate with plans to call for a one-year extension of Bush-era tax cuts for Americans who earn under 250-thousand dollars. The country is being accused of getting around existing sanctions by getting paid for oil with precious metals, or through bartering. These new sanctions would discourage that practice.Obama says he_s still committed to coming to a diplomatic solution when it comes to dealing with Iran, but the ball is in their court to respect global demands. At the center of the issue is Iran_s nuclear program, which they insist is simply for energy purposes and not for creating weapons n a position most other countries aren_t buying.In Oslo Norway, there was a bomb scare that resulted in a huge chunk of the city being evacuated. A US Embassy vehicle was spotted with a suspicious-looking device attached to it. Police quickly cordoned off a 500 yard area around the embassy, evacuated buildings, and shut down most transportation including bus and rail lines.It was later determined that the so-called bomb was a training device which had been inadvertently left on the vehicle. Police are still reeling from criticism that they didn_t act quickly enough after Anders Behring Breivik_s deadly bombing and killing spree last year.Mexico_s war on drug cartels is continuing, with several key MILITARY officials being hit with criminal charges 3 Generals and a Lieutenant Colonel were arrested in May, and have now been slapped with formal charges. All 4 are accused of organized crime to further drug-trafficking.It_s suspected that the officers played major roles in either aiding or protecting the notorious Beltran Leyva cartel. Most shocking is the high-ranking positions they held in the military n one of the accused once served as Mexico_s assistant defense secretary.
